European Day of Languages

Wednesday 1 October 2014

Bonjour! Guten Tag! Labas! Just a few of the ways in which the children were able to greet each other last Friday. It was European Day of Languages, which is celebrated every year on 26th September in schools across Europe.

In both the Infant and Junior Assemblies, a number of children (who were very brave) spoke eloquently about their home country and shared both their language and culture with everyone. A big thank you to Mrs Mantecon and Miss Knight for helping the children to prepare. We learnt how to count to 10 in German and Russian as well as the days of the week in Spanish.

In the afternoon, each year group had chosen a country to focus on and the children participated in a number of activities from creating flags (even in Lego by 3 enthusiastic Year 5s!), writing a letter to a pen pal in Austria (Year 3) and learning some basic words and phrases (Italian in Year 6)! Miss Rogers read 'Les Trois Petitis Cochons' (The 3 Little Pigs) to Reception children who were amazed at how much French they knew! It was a great day, where both children and staff learnt a great deal! The children will share more of these activities in their Year Group Assemblies.
